Always use a 1K ohm resistor to limt the current to the led

DC Users

You could put a pair of these back to back, but wired in opposite polarity to each other, at different places on your layout, and your trains would never run against a red signal.

DC and DCC Users
Turnout Position Indicators.
Hook these up to the same 12vdc power that power your switche motors on your turnouts. You will then always know at a glance whether the turnout is lined for the mainline or the turnout.
