MODEL RAILROADERS HOOK-UP INFO FOR LEDS

REMEMBER

YOU WILL ALWAYS NEED SOME KIND OF CURRENT LIMITING RESISTOR

WHEN HOOKING UP LEDS TO YOUR MODEL RAILROAD

As a general rule, use a 1 k ohm resistor for running leds at track voltages and use a 500 ohm resistor for running leds at 12 volts DC from your Fixed 12vdc Accessory Terminals. If you want to be really precise, you can use our Led Current Limiting Resistor Calculator to get it perfect. You will need to know the forward voltage drop and maximum rated current for the led in question, as well as what voltage your supply source is. You can get the led information from our spec sheets, and the Voltage from your Power Pack.

HEADLIGHTS - 3 different white leds to choose from

It is very easy to replace the Headlights in older Locomotives. All you need is a white led and a resistor for a simple installation.

Or you could use 2 leds and 2 resistors, wired opposite each other, and the lights would change direction with the travel of the engine.

For a more realistic incandescent lamp appearance to your led headlights you could mix 2 drops Tamiya Brand Acrylic X-22 Clear and 1 drop Tamiya X-26 Clear Orange to give them a warm white or golden glow look, and its really inexpensive. Those two bottles of paint will paint thousands of white leds.

SINGLE DWARF SIGNALS - dozens and dozens of leds to choose from

The possibilities are endless: For a easy to wire no extra switches, relays or other stuff needed.

Simply wire some 2 lead bicolor leds ( the kind that change from red to green and vice-versa upon reversing the polarity) with a 1k ohm resistor to your track. Wire them so they match the direction your engine responds to when using the reversing switch on your Power Pack. When the engine moves forward it should be going towards the green , and away from the red. When you change direction - The Opposite Happens.

You could wire a pair of them up back to back so you have signals facing both directions

DUAL POSITION DWARF SIGNALS

I wired this up for the picture, so both the red and green are lit up, normally you wouldnt want them this way

TURNOUT POSITION INDICATORS

You could use any of our leds as turnout position indicators

HERE IS A GREAT ARTICLE FROM N SCALE MAGAZINE WRITTEN BY BOB KENDALL ON

HOW TO WIRE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF LEDS UP AS TURNOUT POSITION INDICATORS

click here for Turnout Position Indicator Article (Adobe Acrobat - .pdf document)

I recommend a subscription to this magazine even if you don't model in N Scale - Lots of good info applicable to any scale

TRACK BUMPERS - dozens of styles to choose from

Atlas makes a line of both N Scale and HO Scale Track Bumpers.

Putting a led at the end of the track will keep your engineers from running off the end of the tracks.

and we havent even talked about using white leds to light inside structures

or using blue leds for Safety - Men at Work - Do Not Move Locomotive

or red leds on top of tall structures or mounted on bridges

or amber leds as rotary beacons on Locomotives - Emergency Vehicles - Barricades.....
